THE FOLLOWING ARE SYMPTOMS AND
CONDITIONS COMMONLY TREATED BY
THE WASHINGTON ACUPUNCTURE CENTER.
TREMORS
Tremors are involuntary movements in one or more parts of the body produced by
rhythmical alternate contractions of opposing muscle groups. They may be produced
by diseases, such as Parkinsonism, multiple sclerosis, Wilson's disease, Friedreich's
ataxia, arteriosclerosis or neurosyphilis. Alcohol and narcotic withdrawal may cause
tremors temporarily. Psychotrophic drugs, such as Thorazine, may cause tremors which
persist long after the drug is discontinued. There are also people with a benign
hereditary tremor which becomes more pronounced when they are emotionally disturbed.
Since there are so many different causes of tremors, it is important to make the
correct diagnosis, especially in the case of alcohol or drug related tremors. Withdrawal
of drugs should be medically supervised and any therapeutic treatment available should
be given before acupuncture.
Acupuncture can relieve tremors from different causes. It can free patients from
drugs, such a L-Dopa and Artane, which have dangerous side effects. Most patients
notice considerable reduction in tremor by the time they have had six treatments,
but many more treatments may be required for progressive neurological disorders.
