THE FOLLOWING ARE SYMPTOMS AND
CONDITIONS COMMONLY TREATED BY
THE WASHINGTON ACUPUNCTURE CENTER.
ITCHING (PRURITUS)
Itching is an uncomfortable sensation due to irritation of a penpheral nerve.
It is a symptom, not a disease, and has many possible causes. It may or may not be
accompanied by visible abnormalities of the skin.
Allergic reactions are a common cause of itching which should be eliminated if possible.
Many drugs cause itching, even antihistamines prescribed for treatment of allergies
in some cases. Scratching usually makes itching worse and should be avoided. Insect
bites, parasitic infestation and bacterial infections should be identified and given
appropriate medical treatment. Systemic diseases causing itching should also be identified
and treated. In many cases, however, the cause of itching cannot be identified.
Acupuncture can relieve itching from almost any cause and can be given along with
other medical treatment when indicated. Six to ten acupuncture treatments will usually
give relief from any type of chronic itching. Most patients stop itching after their
first treatment, but more treatments are required for lasting relief.
Acupuncture can also relieve emotional problems, such as anxiety, which may be causative
factors in itching.
Mild itching may be a symptom of wound healing or recovery from nerve damage.
