THE FOLLOWING ARE SYMPTOMS AND
CONDITIONS COMMONLY TREATED BY
THE WASHINGTON ACUPUNCTURE CENTER.
MENIERE'S
Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear characterized by episodes of deafness,
tinnitus, vertigo, nausea and vomiting. The patient tends to fall toward the involved
ear and becomes depressed about his disability.
Antibiotics should be given to clear up any ear infection. Drugs, such as atropine,
scopolamine, dimenhydrinate or antihistamines may be helpful but have undesirable
side effects.
Surgery or ultrasound to destroy the labyrinth relieves the vertigo and nausea but
increases deafness. Such hazardous procedures may also cause brain and facial nerve
damage. If the patient's symptoms are due to a tumor, however, it should be removed
surgically. Correct diagnosis is therefore especially important.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for Meniere's disease after any infection
has been cleared up with antibiotics. Six to ten treatments will give relief in most
cases. Since Meniere's syndrome tends to be recurrent, however, another series of
acupuncture treatments may be required years or months later.
Nutritional therapy including Niacinamide, Lecithin, Vitamins A, C and E should be
started along with acupuncture.
